WANA (Nov 26) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, met with Arsenio Domingues, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), to discuss cooperation and condemn the recent EU and UK sanctions on Iran’s shipping industry as violations of international law and IMO conventions.

 

During the meeting, Takht-Ravanchi highlighted Iran’s professional activities within the IMO and emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity in the region to enhance maritime security and the safety of shipping in the area.

 

He stated, “The Israeli regime, by committing various international crimes in Gaza and Lebanon, is the primary source of tension and instability in the region.”

Takht-Ravanchi also condemned the recent sanctions imposed by the European Union and the UK against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s shipping industry, calling these measures a violation of international law, particularly the IMO conventions.

 

In response, Domingues acknowledged the developments in the Red Sea region and reaffirmed the importance of safety and security in maritime navigation. He underscored Iran’s role in enhancing maritime safety for both ships and seafarers.

 

Domingues also expressed his commitment to fostering greater cooperation between the IMO and the Islamic Republic of Iran, mentioning that he had proposed several initiatives and plans to further strengthen these relations.
